Rietveld began and ended his career as an architect with the same kind of a commission, namely renovating a jewelry shop. The chairs for the jeweler Steltman were mirror images of each other and originally covered in white leather. The asymmetric form does not close off the space but has the open structure that Rietveld was already trying to use in all of his furniture pieces in the years 1918 to 1924.
